SFF Saturday is a group of authors who post snippets of SFF prose and poetry for comment. You can check out other SFF Saturday posts, too.
My snippet is another few lines from a work in progress called Herald (at the moment). Eventually, the project be a fantasy loosely based on the Hundred Years War, but it’s in the very early draft stages.
Previous Snippets:
Denis, the Soleil d’Or Herald of Revena has just called the name of a fallen Angth soldier, at the behest of the Angth King–Denis’s enemy.
The man’s body shimmered as his name leaped into the sky and joined the others, leaving a trail of silver to dim the afternoon’s light as the letters journeyed toward the enemy camp.
Before the king could see him teeter, Denis placed his gloved hand on the ground to steady himself. “Gods’ speed to you.” Once he felt stable again, he pulled his glove back on.
“How many have you called this day?” The Red king closed the last of the distance between them, his boot mere inches from Denis’s knees.
Exhaustion carved away care. Denis stood despite his proximity to the king. Steel rasped against hard leather as the blades of the king’s escort cleared their scabbards.
I look forward to these every week. You have a talent for drawing your reader into the scene with very few words. I get the feeling that this is one I would get quickly sucked into and unable to easily put it down.
Thank you so much!
I do have to say that posting these snippets has given me the boot to get working on this WIP again. First I (well, my pen name) has to finish a sequel, but then I think this WIP will get some serious attention. More than just 10 sentences at a time!
I really hope so. You’ve created a wonderful world here that I really want to explore further.
More than just honoring the dead, obviously! What are there Heralds?
In this case, they put the dead of war to rest.
Amazing work! I get sucked in every time I read one of your snippets.
Thank you. 😀
Good stuff…though probably not the best choice to rise at that particular moment (based on the reaction there at the end).
Well, he is standing very close to the king at the moment…
Every word toward the end is fraught with tension. Your details really paint a vivid scene. Truly riveting. And I love what happens when a name is called. This is such s neat read.
Thank you so much!
I love a shimmering body.
Heh. 🙂
Wow. This is just…wow. Great world you’ve created here.
Aww, thank you so much!
